New Zealand Export Halal Scheme (NZEHS)

New Zealand Export Halal Scheme (NZEHS)

Scheme Owner Expectations for AHOs and Periodic Assessments

The New Zealand Export Halal Scheme (NZEHS) was developed in response to discussions with the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industry (MPI) around two separate Animal Products Notices issued by MPI under the Animal Products Act 1999.  These notices had been issued by MPI to set requirements for all Approved Halal Organisations (AHOs) operating in New Zealand and certifying halal products for export purposes.  This is a general scheme intended for all halal exports, irrespective of the markets into which product is being exported.  There may be additional requirements for specific markets, and these will be published under Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMARs).  These additional requirements may require other specific accreditations.

The specified material and products covered by the NZEHS include:

  1. meat and meat products derived from halal species,
  2. non-dairy animal fats and oils derived from halal species,
  3. gelatine derived from halal species,
  4. poultry meat and poultry meat products, and
  5. dairy material and dairy products.

Applicant CABs will need to apply to MPI in the first instance. Their approval is required before JAS-ANZ can commence the accreditation process. The process for approval is described on the MPI Website.
