GLOBALG.A.P. is a global scheme established initially by European retailers to ensure farmers and groups of farmers met customer requirements through the use of Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and meeting regulatory requirements.

The standards developed by this scheme cover off on a number of issues that relate to safe food production, including:

  • food safety,

  • sustainable production methods,

  • worker and animal welfare, and

  • responsible use of water, compound feed and plant propagation materials.

Since it’s inception in 1997, the number of certifications has grown steadily, with current numbers around 130,000 in 120 countries globally.  This includes certificates issued under GLOBALG.A.P. benchmarked schemes and standards.  Certificates are able to be verified through the GLOBALG.A.P. Database which is one of the largest online sources for validated farm data on food safety and sustainability.  Through this database customers are able to effectively access up-to-date information on the organisations and products that hold certification.

JAS-ANZ has been involved in the GLOBALG.A.P. scheme since 2002, providing accreditation to some of the larger certification bodies involved in the scheme.  GLOBALG.A.P. certification, because of its origins in the EU, underpins the majority of  fresh fruit and vegetable exports from Australia and New Zealand to EU customers.
