FAQ
Below are answers to many of the questions we are frequently asked.
1. I want to get a product (or service or organisation or person) certified. How do I go about it?
Certification Bodies provide certification services. JAS-ANZ does not provide this service.
To locate Certification Bodies that are accredited to certify to a particular standard, the first step is to identify the acronym or number of the standard you want certification to (for example ISO 9001, ISO 14001, AS/NZS 60335.2.10 etc.).
If you don’t know the acronym or number of the standard you want certification to, visit SAI Global's InfoStore or contact your national standards writing body (Standards Australia or Standards New Zealand).
If you have the acronym or number of the standard you are seeking certification to (eg. ISO 9001, ISO 14001, AS/NZS 60335.2.10 etc.) you can use JAS-ANZ’s Accredited Bodies Register to generate a list of list of JAS-ANZ accredited Certification Bodies who offer certification to the standard you are interested in.
To do this, go to the Advanced Search page in the Accredited Bodies section of the JAS-ANZ Register.

3. I am interested in importing a product into Australia or New Zealand. How do I find out if it needs to be certified to particular standards before being imported and offered for sale?
Information on requirements that apply to imported products (such as whether they need to be certified as meeting particular standards) can be obtained from government organisations that administer these requirements.
In Australia overview information on importing can be obtained from australia.gov.au.
In New Zealand overview information on importing can be obtained from business.govt.nz.
4. I want to check if an organisation is certified by a JAS-ANZ Accredited Body to a particular standard.
Information on organisations certified by JAS-ANZ accredited bodies is available from the Certified Organisation search page within the JAS-ANZ Register.
Search tips
- Enter the first few letters of the organisation name into the Organisation search box. This should generate a list of organisations that match those criteria.
- If you get too many results increase the number of letters of the organisation name.
- If your result is unsuccessful check the spelling of the organisation’s name, enter fewer letters, or if the organisation has more than one word in its name (i.e. ”ABC Export”) enter a few letters of the second word (i.e. "Export").
If you are unable to locate the organisation you should contact the Certification Body who certified the organisation.
5. I want to get my product tested. Who do I approach?
Product testing is usually undertaken by test laboratories.
A list of Australian test laboratories is available from NATA.
A list of New Zealand test laboratories is available from IANZ.
6. I want to get training in a system such as QMS (ISO 9001), EMS (ISO 14001), OHSMS (AS/NZS 4801, OHSAS 18001), Food Safety Management Systems (ISO 22000). Where can I obtain a list of trainers?
JAS-ANZ does not provide training in these areas. An internet search in which you specify the type of training, the standard, and preferred location should produce a list of training organisations.
7. I want to get my product certified for export. How do I go about this?
Export requirements are generally set by the country you are exporting to. JAS-ANZ does not have information on export requirements.
Austrade and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise may offer assistance to exporters in Australia and New Zealand respectively.
8. I want to get a list of organisations that can certify or inspect to ISO standards.

9. I am a Certification or Inspection Body interested in obtaining JAS-ANZ accreditation. How do I go about?
Information for Certification or Inspection Bodies on how to become accredited.
10. I've heard about ISO 9001. What is it?
ISO 9001 specifies requirements for a quality management system that can be used for internal application by organisations, or for certification, or for contractual purposes. It focuses on the effectiveness of the quality management system in meeting customer requirements.
If you are interested in establishing and then promoting the fact that your organisation's quality management system (QMS) satisfies the ISO 9001 standard contact a JAS-ANZ accredited conformity assessment body (CAB) from this list.
11. I've heard about ISO 14001. What is it?
ISO 14001 is a standard that organisations can use to demonstrate sound environmental performance by controlling the impacts of their activities consistent with their environmental policy and objectives. Environmental objectives are as defined by the organisation and usually include regulatory requirements as well as voluntary objectives. If you are interested in implementing an environmental management system (EMS) based on the ISO 14001 standard in your organisation contact a JAS-ANZ accredited conformity assessment body (CAB) from this list.
12. What’s the difference between Accreditation and Certification?
Accreditation and Certification are regularly used interchangeably. However, in the conformity assessment industry both terms have very specific meanings. In layman’s terms accreditation can be described as “certifying the certifiers”. Conformity assessment bodies (CABs), more widely known as Certification Bodies, are accredited after they successfully undergo a process of assessment by an accreditation body like JAS-ANZ, to ensure they meet international standards that among other things assess the bodies impartiality and competence.
Certification is undertaken by an accredited CAB and is a process by which an independent and competent third party certifies that a product, system or person, conforms to specific requirements.
13. What is the difference between a standard (such as ISO 9001) and a scheme (such as Quality Management Systems)?
A Standard is a document which provides requirements, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results. Products, systems or persons can be certified against standards.
The scheme provides the rules and processes to be followed by individuals involved in determining if a product, system or person satisfies the requirements specified in a standard.
